What are the most important fire exinguisher regulations for businesses?
BS 5306 – Fire Extinguishers
Fire extinguishers are required by law in every commercial property. The regulations governing fire extinguishers in the UK are The Regulatory Reform Order 2005 and sections 3 and 8 of the BS 5306.
What is the minimum number of fire extinguishers required?
The number of fire extinguishers your commercial building will require is dependent on its size. The BS 5306 fire regulation states that for you’ll require a minimum of two fire extinguishers per floor area up to 400m2 that are rated Class A, which are used to put our wood and paper fires.
However, you will also likely be required to have CO2 fire extinguishers, which are designed to tackle electrical fires. If you have electrical equipment in your commercial establishment, then you will need at least 2kg CO2 extinguishers to be compliant with fire regulations and 5kg ones if there is 415 volt electrical equipment present.
Why do fire extinguishers require commissioning?
Fire extinguishers are required by fire regulations to be commissioned before they are installed, to check that they are fit for use. Even if you have the right type and size of fire extinguisher, if you have not had it commissioned, it will not be compliant with regulations.
If you do not source your fire extinguishers from a fire protection company, then they will still require professional commissioning. You will therefore need to contact a fire protection company, such as ourselves, to ensure that your fire extinguishers are compliant.
